The Portugal D7 Visa, also known as the Retirement or Passive Income
Visa, is ideal for non-EU nationals with stable passive income streams.
Designed for retirees or individuals living off pensions, rental income,
dividends, or similar sources, it allows residency in Portugal without
active employment. Key Features: Initial residency grants a 1-year
residency permit, renewable for two 2-year periods. Pathway to
Citizenship after 5 years of legal residency, applicants may apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship. Schengen Access is a visa-
free travel across the Schengen Zone.

Portugal’s D7 visa presents an appealing option for individuals with passive income seeking European residency. It provides visa-free access to all Schengen countries, enabling easy travel across much of Europe without the need for additional visas. Beneficiaries can also take advantage of Portugal’s Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) scheme, which offers significant tax benefits, including reduced or zero tax for up to 10 years.

Beyond financial perks, the D7 visa offers access to Portugal’s high-quality public services, including world-class healthcare, education, and social programs. While it is primarily designed for those with passive income, the visa also allows holders to work or start a business, providing valuable flexibility for those looking to build a life in Portugal.

To be eligible, applicants must be non-EU citizens aged 18 or older and must provide a police clearance certificate from their home country. They may also include financially dependent parents or children between the ages of 18 and 21. In terms of financial requirements, a single applicant must have a minimum monthly income of €820. For couples, the required income is €1,230 per month, while a family of three must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of €1,501.

To begin the process, applicants must first gather their documents and submit them to the Portuguese consulate. Once submitted, they must await the review and issuance of the visa or residency permit. Upon approval, a one-year initial permit is granted, which can then be renewed in two-year increments. After five years of holding legal residency, applicants may become eligible to apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship. The total processing time for this entire procedure is approximately nine months.
