The Portugal D8 Visa, commonly known as the Digital Nomad Visa, is designed for remote workers, freelancers, and digital nomads from non-EU/EEA/Swiss countries who wish to live and work in Portugal.
It offers two pathways:

📍 Temporary Stay Visa – Valid up to 1 year

📍 Residence Visa – Valid up to 5 years, renewable or convertible to permanent residency

After 5 years of legal stay, applicants can apply for Portuguese citizenship.

Portugal’s D8 visa offers a compelling pathway to European residency with a range of benefits ideal for remote workers, freelancers, and digital nomads. Applicants receive full residency and work authorization, allowing them to live and work legally in the country. One of the most attractive features is access to the Schengen Area, enabling visa-free travel across 26 European countries. Portugal also offers significant tax advantages through its 10-year Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) scheme, which can result in substantial savings. The country is consistently ranked among the top five destinations globally for expats, praised for its high quality of life, safety, affordable cost of living, and vibrant culture. In addition, residents gain access to robust public services, including healthcare, education, and social programs, making Portugal not only a lifestyle destination but a practical choice for long-term living.

To be eligible for Portugal’s D8 visa, applicants must be non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and at least 18 years old. A police clearance certificate is required, and applicants may include financial dependents such as parents or children under 16. Additional requirements include maintaining a Portuguese bank account for a minimum of three months, holding valid Portuguese health insurance, and submitting the application through the Portuguese consulate in their home country.

Applicants must also meet minimum monthly income thresholds: €3,280 for single applicants, €4,920 for couples, and €6,003 for a family of three. These financial requirements ensure that applicants can support themselves and any dependents while residing in Portugal.

The processing time for the Portugal D8 Visa is around 3 months from the submission of the application to visa issuance.
